S.L.Jbumblebee

  • The word ‘bumblebee’ is a compound word. The word ‘bumble’ means to hum buzz drone.
  • Bumblebees can fly very quickly. They can reach ground speeds of 54 kilometres per hour.
  • Bumblebees are very strong! They carry up to 90% percent of their body weight in food with them to avoid starvation.
  • Bumblebees can do more work and carry more pollen than other bees, including honeybees. In fact, they can do up to   50 times as much work as a normal honeybee.
  • The number of bumblebees is declining in New Zealand due to a number of factors, includingtheremoval of wildflowers and flowering trees, habitat loss, and extensive use of
  • pesticides.

    Thanks for attempting this SLJ activity, 'The Air Up There' and for trying to allocate the correct words to the blank spaces in the sentences provided. It seems that you may need to go back to the 'NZ Bumblebee Conservation Trust website' and find the right words to fill the blank for the first sentence. If 'bumble' doesn't mean "hum, buzz or drone" what does it mean? These words that you've used are called 'onomatopoeia'.
    You've done a great job with all of the other sentences. Don't you find the last sentence saddening? Did you know that bumblebee's aren't common in Australia? We're very lucky to have bumblebees and I think that we should respect them because they do SO much for our environment.
